The Basics of Windows

Windows is the main software program that runs when a computer is turned on, providing access to the Internet and various other programs and applications. The program also allows users to create and print documents, play music and video, and work with files and folders. The first version of Windows was released in 1985 as an add-on to Microsoft’s existing MS-DOS disk operating system. It allowed users to visually navigate a virtual desktop, opening graphical “windows” showing the contents of electronic folders and files with a mouse click, rather than typing commands and directory paths at a text prompt. Windows was developed into a variety of versions, with more functionality offered in later packages, including the networkable Windows for Workgroups and high-powered Windows NT.

The current Windows 10 offers a modern user experience, with a familiar Start menu and a classic search feature that work across devices. Unlike its predecessors, it supports touch and pen input along with multiple screens. Its slick, Metro-style interface has been streamlined for better performance, while the Start menu can be customized with pinned apps for easy access. Windows 10 also includes a hover menu over the Maximize button that offers layout options, such as one large window on the left and two on top of each other on the right, depending on the screen size.

A wide selection of games and programs are available for the Windows system, with new ones being released on a regular basis. These include both work and entertainment programs, as well as the popular Microsoft Office suite of productivity tools. In addition, the Windows system provides access to a range of hardware devices, such as printers and scanners, AIO (all-in-one) computers, and web cameras.

Another advantage of the Windows system is its ability to handle multiple programs at the same time. This is accomplished using a feature known as cooperative multitasking, where each program is executed in its own “sandbox” that limits its access to system resources such as memory and CPU. The system can support up to 32 executing windows simultaneously.

In the past, Windows was designed to run on a number of different types of computers, including PowerPC, DEC Alpha and MIPS systems. With the advent of the x86-based personal computer, however, most versions of Windows were built to support that processor architecture only. The exception was Windows NT, which supported both the x86 and PowerPC systems up to version 7.0.

Because the Windows system is so widely used, it has a large following of fans who are eager to upgrade to the latest version when it becomes available. As a result, the price of this software is relatively high when compared to its competitors, especially when purchased from a store. However, the operating system is usually included in the price of equipment that has it pre-installed, such as PCs and laptops from Apple. The system can also be purchased independently from the manufacturer and installed on a separate device.
