How to Get Glass Cut to Size

Glass is utilised in many applications, from windows to table tops and even doors. In order to utilise it effectively, it must be the right size for the application. Glass is available in large panels and can often be difficult to cut by hand, however with the correct tools it can be done easily.

To get the correct measurement for a piece of glass, it must be shaped early on in the fabrication process. This can be a specialized tool or a process that is part of the machinery that cuts and shapes the glass. This is why it is important for architects and contractors to have the correct measurements of a new space, so that the glass can be properly sized.

The proper measurements can be determined with a tape measure and framing square. A good straight steal ruler will also work. It is important to remember that most types of glass have little leeway and that a mistake may result in ragged edges. This is especially true for toughened glass, which is a specialised material that undergoes a process of controlled heating and rapid cooling. This makes it much more challenging to cut than regular glass, and is a reason why it should only be used by experienced professionals or by those who are familiar with the procedure.

It can also be cushioned with felt to protect the surface and reduce the risk of scratching it. Using a straight, thin steel ruler, mark the glass along the edge where you want it to be cut. This should be a line that is 1/8″ larger than the final size, as the machine has some tolerance.

Position the glass cutter over the marked line and apply moderate pressure to cut the glass along the scoreline. If the pressure is applied evenly, the glass should snap on both sides of the mark. If it does not, continue applying moderate pressure and repeat the process until the glass is broken into pieces. Be careful to not press too hard and damage the edge of the glass, as this will result in ragged edges.
