What Does A Glazier Do?

What Does A Glazier Do?

If you’ve ever watched a professional glazier score a piece of glass with a flick of his wrist and break it into just the right shape, you’ll know that it looks like magic. A glazier’s job involves cutting, shaping, installing and repairing flat glass and mirrors for use in homes and businesses. They may also work on large skyscrapers and other commercial buildings.

Glass and mirrors are a common fixture in the modern home, providing both practicality and an opportunity to add design flair. They can make a room feel larger, enhance lighting and create the illusion of space. The selection of sizes, edges and finishes on offer means that you can create a unique look for any room.

A glazier works with a wide range of materials including aluminium, timber and stainless steel frames and can cut the glass to size. They often work on construction sites and must follow safety regulations, completing site inductions before working. They might fit pre-made glazed units, such as shower enclosures or sliding doors that are made in factories and assembled on site. They can also apply putty, chemical compounds or rubber strips to seal joints between panes and the frame.

They may also repair existing glass and mirrors or prepare them for a new installation. This can include sanding and cleaning the surface, applying silvering solution or coating with a reflective film, polishing and buffing. Then they’ll install the glass into a window sash or other prepared opening. They may do this in a workshop, on a construction site or at a client’s home.

When replacing a broken mirror, it’s important to get the right size to avoid distortion. The mirror should be a minimum of 2/3 the width of the furniture below it, to avoid an unsightly bulge. Jim’s Glass can cut a wide variety of custom sizes, making it easy to achieve the perfect fit.
